| In
retail lighting, style is obviously important to establish the desired ambiance.
Another problem that is regularly encountered is shelving. Grocery stores present
quite a challenge with high shelves blocking out a lot of light. So pay special
attention to the light lost factor particularly where rows of fixtures are installed
perpendicular to aisles. Ceiling
Height: Most retail stores have ceiling heights of 12 ft or greater. The
higher the ceiling, the more light output from a particular fixture is needed. While
some up light is desirable and most retail outlet have highly reflective white ceilings to
take advantage of. For ceilings at the low end of 15 feet, strip fixtures maybe
fine. Only recently has fluorescent lighting technologies overcome some limitations
that now make it practical to use in place of HID. If replacing 450 watt HID
systems, consider the aisle lighter and super-star series.
Food Preparation Areas:
Deli's and butcher shops should consider an enclosed fixture such as a vapor tight
in lower ceilings and the aisle lighter and super-star in high bay ceiling. While the aisle lighter and super-star
fixtures are open, in a high bay ceiling vapor may not be that important a factor.
Cash Registers: Use the
IES recommended light level here with a generous amount general lighting. |
