Manufacturing Facilities *
Mfg.jpg (5901 bytes) While there are many variables to consider, there are a few important factors that should not be overlooked.  Manufacturing facilities are generally operating 24 hours 7 days a week, so the potential saving has to be derived from efficient technologies alone.  On the other hand, most warehouses are only used several hours a day.  With high bay lights going all day, there is a lot of potential energy savings to be realized in a warehouse.
Motion Sensors
Motion sensors will reduce energy consumption proportional to warehouse use, but it only works where the restrike time on the lamp is very short, so HID is out of the picture.   With motion sensors, the less a warehouse is used the more energy savings realized.  Experience also tells us not to overlook task lighting for the warehouse work areas.  The light there would be the same for a factory floor depending the visual task required.

Ceiling Height: Most warehouses have ceiling heights of 15 ft or greater.  The higher the ceiling, the more light output from a particular fixture is needed.  While some up light is desirable, most warehouses have poor reflectivity in the ceiling so reflectors work well in this application.  For ceilings at the low end of 15 feet, strip fixtures maybe fine.   Only recently has fluorescent lighting technologies overcome some limitations that now make it practical to use in place of HID.  If replacing 450 watt HID systems, consider the super-star series.

Dirt:  If the environment is dirty, consider an enclosed fixture such as a vapor tight or vandal resistant in lower ceilings and the super-star in high bay ceiling.  While the aisle lighter and super-star fixtures are open, you will need the light output these two fixtures provide.   Otherwise you will have to use HID.
